The Most Shocking Celebrity Divorces of 2016

Celebrities are prone to the same issues in their marriages as the rest of us, and with every passing year, we hear about more celebrity marriages that end in divorce for one reason or another. Divorce is never a pleasant experience, but for those going through the emotional challenges of ending a marriage, it may be comforting to know that even the well-known face similar challenges.

Furthermore, we can see from these high-profile examples how divorce can sometimes be handled quietly and constructively, while at other times, unresolved matters can result in unnecessary stress, expense, and drama.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard

In perhaps the most most famous celebrity divorce proceeding of 2016, actress Amber Heard is pursuing a divorce from Pirates of the Caribbean actor Johnny Depp and has also alleged physical violence by the actor. Heard filed for restraining order against Depp in May, and photos showed the actress with facial injuries. An attorney for Depp, however, denied the allegations of physical abuse and suggested that they are a ploy to obtain a large financial settlement in the divorce from Depp.

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne

The View co-host Sharon Osbourne announced that she was divorcing from her heavy metal singer husband Ozzy Osbourne in May, the second time the couple has planned to divorce in just the last several years. The Osbournes famously starred in their own reality show in the early 2000s, and Mr. Osbourne has dealt with substance abuse issues for many years. Infidelity on the part of Mr. Osbourne also appears to be an issue leading to their split.

Dennis and Kimberly Quaid

In late June, Kimberly Quaid filed for divorce from her actor husband Dennis Quaid in a California court. The couple pursued an amicable resolution to their 12-year marriage, dividing assets between themselves in a settlement and sharing joint custody of their daughter.

Mika Brzezinski and James Hoffer

MSNBC’s Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski quietly finalized a divorce from her husband, television journalist James Hoffer, of 23 years in June. No details of the divorce were made public, and, as such, their divorce is a demonstration of the privacy that a divorcing couple can maintain while completing an amicable divorce. As an MSNBC source told the New York Post, “Mika’s divorce was finalized in the past year. She’s really grateful that it was done amicably and in private.”
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner

You may be thinking, “Didn’t the divorce between these two happen a while ago?” The famous couple announced in 2015 that they were getting a divorce following reports of Affleck’s infidelity, but news sources indicate that the couple has never filed for divorce due to the complications of a busy schedule and ongoing family needs in parenting their children. Affleck and Garner are no longer in a romantic relationship but continue to share in parenting duties.
